I was chatting with one of my clients last
night who had a friend who was told by the
doctor that she was morbidly obese
She didn’t take the news very well and felt
the doctor had been insensitive with his
words (and hurt her feelings)
Jeezo
morbidly obese is a medical term for anyone
who has a BMI over 40
obese is a medical term for anyone who has a
BMI over 30 but under 40
overweight is a medical term for anyone who
has a BMI over 25 but under 30
Your BMI is calculated by how much body
weight you have for your height, you can
calculate it here
I don’t do this with clients a lot because they
know if they are overweight or obese, and
they are working on it with me.
If someone is trying to get from obese to
overweight for example, we will calculate
the weight they need to be and aim for it
Ok so back to the friend, would she be
offended if the doctor told her she had
diabetes, cancer, heart disease?
No, she would likely be devastated and
might actually take some action to remedy
the situation
Maybe the doctor could have told her she
was pleasantly plump but it doesn’t carry
the same weight with the message
(pardon the pun)
You guys that have been reading my emails
for a while know I get driven crazy by the
PC brigade not wanting to use the word fat
fat makes up roughly 25-40% of your body
and you need approx 20-30% of fat in your
diet every day to survive and be healthy
If your body is carrying too much fat, you
are either overweight or obese
So, come on guys, don’t get your feelings
hurt when you are told you have too much
fat on your body
Instead, take a reality check and do something
about it now, don’t wait to be given more bad
news and if you don’t know where to start, get
in touch with me
I can sort you out, but you have to want to
I’m pretty honest too, not that I would want
to hurt your feelings but if you are easily
offended, I may not be your best bet 🙂
